Forum Health Heart Hospital at TMH Reaches Milestone

On August 18, 2005, The Heart Hospital at Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital achieved a landmark by performing 500 open-heart surgeries since the July 2002 launch of the open-heart surgery and interventional cardiology program. The milestone surgery, a coronary bypass, was performed on a Warren area resident by cardiothoracic surgeon and chief of cardiac surgery at TMH, Pyongsoo D. Yoon, M.D.

“Were so proud to reach this momentous achievement,” stated Elizabeth Maiorana, Corporate Clinical Executive, Forum Health Cardiovascular Services. “In view of the national decline of heart surgeries performed due to the introduction of drug eluting stents, were right on track with our anticipated third-year projection for our program.”

Maiorana also noted the success and milestone achievement of the interventional cardiology program at Trumbull Memorial Hospital. The interventional cardiology program, which recently reached its milestone, has surpassed expected projections by performing over 530 procedures since the program opened.

The Heart Hospital officially opened at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in July 2002, establishing Trumbull Countys first and only interventional cardiology and open-heart surgery program. The new cardiovascular program, an extension of the Heart Hospital based at Northside Medical Center, became a reality thanks to a collaboration of physicians and medical and community leaders sharing Forum Healths dedication to improve community healthcare, particularly related to providing advanced comprehensive heart and vascular care

The services provided by the Heart Hospital at Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital allow area patients to receive comprehensive treatment including the highest level of cardiovascular care and advanced heart surgery options close to home and in the care of the medical professionals that they know and trust.

During the first operational year, the open-heart surgery program at Trumbull Memorial Hospital experienced tremendous growth and success. Now, with over 500 open-heart surgeries performed and outcome statistics comparable to regional and national benchmarks, the program has proven its success and credibility to the community.

“Quality is linked with volume,” said Pyongsoo Yoon, M.D., indicating that by reaching the milestone level places the hospital among other credible open-heart surgery programs.

The Heart Hospitals team of five cardiothoracic surgeons performs a wide range of surgeries. These include valve replacement and repair, coronary bypass surgery, thoracic and ascending aortic aneurysm and other specialized procedures, such as the Maze procedure for atrial fibrillation. The surgeons are skilled with s beating heart surgery, endoscopic vein harvesting and other innovative procedures, as well as the use of intraoperative transesophageal ECHO, epiaortic ultrasound and other advanced technology to evaluate cardiac function and structure to decrease the risk of stroke.

Interventional cardiology, which complements the open-heart program at Trumbull Memorial Hospital, provides heart patients with access to superior diagnostics and the latest medical and interventional therapies. Fadi Naddour, M.D., Director of Cardiac and Vascular Lab, explained that cardiac specialists perform up-to-date coronary and peripheral vascular diagnostic and interventional procedures. Coronary catheterizations, coronary angioplasty and stent placements, coronary thrombectomy, permanent pacemakers, intravascular ultrasound, transesophageal echocardiograms, IVC filters placement, and peripheral angiography, angioplasty and stenting are among the many interventional or therapeutic procedures performed at Trumbull Memorial Hospital.
