ADDITIONAL SERVICES –
BRAIN INJURY REHABILITATION

A very successful program, brain injury rehabilitation at Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital has a highly-specialized staff. Treatment for cognitive, or thought, impairments and behavioral changes is provided through physical, occupational, speech, and psychological therapies. Programs such as the Special Intensive Assistance Program (which gives patients intensive one-on-one supervision), chemical dependency counseling, audiological testing, and vision screening complete the range of care. In addition to the general therapy areas, the brain injury unit has its own treatment space to provide quiet, confusion-free care.

STROKE REHABILITATION

The stroke rehabilitation program at Hillside provides a variety of services. Its goal is to help patients adapt to any limitations or loss of ability brought on by a stroke. The treatment deals with the many different kinds of impairment which stroke patients may experience -- verbal, physical, emotional, and social. Additional services, such as neuro-muscular retraining, social adjustment group treatment, homemaking skills assessment, vision screening, driver evaluation, and community re-entry can be helpful in addressing the special needs of the stroke patient.

MUSCULOSKELETAL REHABILITATION

The musculoskeletal center staff works with patients who experience the many disorders which can affect nerves, muscles, and bones. Some of the conditions people in this program have experienced are amputation, joint replacement, cerebral palsy, MS, or Guillian-Barre Syndrome. By using advanced equipment and special devices, patients build their strength and stamina and regain ability.

SPINAL CORD INJURY REHABILITATION

This program treats the full range of disabilities associated with spinal cord injury. Some patients have only mild paraparesis, or slight paralysis of the legs. Others enter the program with complete quadriplegia, unable to move their arms and legs at all. The emphasis of the spinal cord injury rehabilitation program is to help patients adjust to a new and different way of living. Physical therapists target mobility skills. Occupational therapists work on daily living, personal care, visual, and cognitive skills. Therapeutic recreation helps patients find new ways to enjoy hobbies and activities. Nurses and physicians focus on respiration, skin breakdown prevention and care, and bowel and bladder function. Social work and psychological services are very important parts of this rehabilitation program, helping patients adjust to the emotional and social aspects of disability. This includes dealing with all the aspects of life patients must face once they leave the hospital.

CHRONIC PAIN MANAGEMENT

Chronic pain is defined as pain that lasts longer than six months in spite of appropriate medical treatment. A common disability, chronic pain may have tremendous negative effects on a patient’s quality of life. Typically, people who suffer with chronic pain encounter an endless cycle of physicians, surgeries, medications, and treatments without receiving much relief. The Chronic Pain Management program’s goal is to help patients gain relief from chronic pain through a variety of physical and psychological treatments. Patients learn greater pain tolerance, reduce depression and social withdrawal, and improve their activity level. The program also aims to reduce the amount of medication taken and helps patients accept their painful condition.

VENTILATOR WEANING PROGRAM

The HOPE Program, Hillside’s Opportunity for Pulmonary Excellence, is a comprehensive, goal-oriented interdisciplinary program designed to wean patients from ventilator dependence. It is appropriate for those who are dependent on a ventilator as a result of trauma, head injury, COPD, or neurological impairments. Because the HOPE Program has a rehabilitation component, patients can begin the ventilator weaning process before healing is complete. A qualified pulmonologist and rehabilitative physician oversee the program. Respiratory, physical, occupational, speech, and recreational therapists are also on the team, along with case managers, psychologists, nurses, and dieticians.

VOCATIONAL PROGRAMS

Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital offers a full range of vocational rehabilitation services designed to determine a person’s ability to perform job-related functions. The Work Hardening Program is an individualized, highly structured, goal-oriented treatment program designed to prepare the injured employee for returning to work. Work Adjustment is a training program designed to develop appropriate work behaviors and Vocational Evaluation helps individuals with physical or emotional disabilities identify vocational interests, abilities, and work skills which fall within their capabilities. In addition, our Placement Services help individuals return to their former employers upon completion of Hillside’s Vocational Rehabilitation Program. When this is not possible, we can provide placement services to help secure gainful employment.
